MR
MELLOR'S RETIREMENT On the afternoon of Wednesday 19 July 1950, the Hall
was filled to capacity with pupils, members of Staff and visitors to mark
Mr Mellor's retirement. On him fell the responsibility and honour of creating
a school of a new type in Chesterfield. Pupils came from all classes of
homes, their only qualification was success in the entrance examination.
From this cross-section of school life, Mr Mellor had to mould spirit
and tradition. Those assembled in the hall paid tribute to their headmaster
and saw John Godfrey, the first head boy present him with a television
set and a cheque raised by voluntary contribution. 'I don't think that
the link between Mr Mellor, old scholars and Tapton House can ever be
severed,' said Mr Godfrey. 'I think the foundation he has built will be
carried on with great care by those who follow - his spirit will always
be at Tapton. He has been a grand chap - I don't think we could have had
better.' 'If any of us were asked to give an example of a good headmaster,
we would all point to Mr Mellor,' he said. 'He is not one of those people
who have let their brains go to their head.' (Laughter). 'He has always
had two feet on the ground and a true respect for all sources of knowledge.'
Stressing that Mr Mellor had been a great influence on the lives of all
students, Mr Godfrey added, 'We know that when you leave Tapton it won't
be the end of all your activities. We know that you are the kind of person
who can't be idle.' Commenting that Mrs Mellor too, had always been a
part of Tapton House, he concluded, 'We hope that when you both look in
(at the television), sometimes a vision of us will come before you and
you will remember the affection in which we hold you.' A bouquet was presented
to Mrs Mellor by Dorothy Marriott, the newest of the 'old scholars'. Mrs
Mellor expressed her thanks and Mr Mellor thanked all the old pupils 'from
the bottom of his heart' for their kindness. 'That has been the remarkable
thing about Tapton House - kindness,' he said. 'We have tried to make
a spirit and I hope that spirit is going to live.' 'Visitors always say,
'what a happy school'. That is three-sided. It comes from the children,
the staff, and a little bit from myself. 'Brains don't matter so much
so long as you get a happy spirit. It will take you through all the hardships
in the world.' He said that he liked to look upon his pupils as friends;
his home was well known by most and if anyone needed help they knew where
to come. Turning to the staff, he remarked, 'We have had a wonderful staff
here. No man has ever had a more trustworthy staff. But it is not I, it
is not the staff, it is you who have made Tapton House....You have the
right spirit.' Ald. Mrs D M Sutton, (Chairman of the Governors), who presided
presented Mr Mellor with a brief case on behalf of the Governors and Harry
Draycott (the first student admitted) led the pupils in singing 'For he's
a jolly good fellow'. The Mayoress, (Mrs R Brightmore), joined in the
informal get-together which was held in the canteen after the presentation.
On Friday 21 July, Mr Mellor received a raw hide travelling trunk from
the school, and the staff presented an album of photographs of the school
bound in blue Morocco and a set of Dunhill pipes. The staff also entertained
Mr and Mrs Mellor at dinner. In December 1999, Harry Draycott, the first
head boy at Tapton House commented: 'The school charter was definitely
Tubby's work. Macara was a good chum at school. He wrote out the charter
for Tubby Mellor as a work of art. Violet Markham came to school the week
before the opening of the school and took objection to the word 'brutality'.
She had it changed to vileness or cruelty and Mac had only 24 hours to
change the one word (in those days they didn't have such things as 'Tippex').
The first charter was a work of art and he tore it up in his anger. He
was livid.' According to Harry: 'Tubby was so versatile. He taught me
and others Pitman's shorthand but he hadn't had any training for the subject
and kept one week ahead of the class by teaching himself first.' In 1958,
Frank Silcock, the former deputy headmaster wrote in The Taptonian: 'The
idea of a school in a house was always dear to Mr Mellor; the children
were to be more than pupils, they were to be a part of a family and, as
well as learning, they would receive sympathy, help, encouragement and
guidance. From the start Mr Mellor saw that many of the pupils could gain
more benefit from an academic education and soon School Certificate was
being successfully taken by an ever-increasing number of pupils. The demand
grew for more advanced studies, and in 1945 Tapton House became a Grammar
School in all but name. From now on, the sixth form grew in strength,
and the school reached full stature. It was not by accident that Mr Mellor
chose for the school motto, Tenax Propositi. From the beginning he had
seen the possibilities in the he school and that there was a need for
another Grammar School in Chesterfield. He resolved that Tapton House
should be that school and he never wavered in his aim. For 19 years he
devoted his life to the good of the school and the welfare of its pupils
and when he retired in 1950 Tapton House School and Mr Mellor himself
stood high in the estimation of all. He had every reason to be proud of
his achievements but, typically, he did not welcome retirement. He had
so many more plans to put into operation; there was so much to do, so
much that he could do. He had thrived on work, he had loved his teaching
and being with young people. How well we remember his neat, quietly dressed
rotund figure, his face fresh and almost cherubic, his spectacles glinting,
as he moved through the school with quick, short, resolute strides. Never
a welcome sight to idlers and fools! In his lessons too, he was vital,
brimming over with ideas; he was never so happy as when he was in front
of a class, preferably a large one, and his only aids a blackboard and
chalk. He was, by any standards, a very fine teacher and many have cause
to be grateful to him for his insistence on hard work and high aims. He
never abandoned the slowest and no trouble was too great for those who
tried. Many things spring to mind which were so much a part of him and
of school life: his talks in Assembly every Wednesday morning; Room 1
at one o'clock where the best work only was good enough and lame dogs
were helped over any stiles. In the early days who can forget those huge
outings on Ascension Day. But chiefly, when we think about him and Tapton
we remember those Commemoration Days, the beautiful setting on the Top
Lawn, the service, the prize distribution and then The Play, this often
written by Mr Mellor himself and often produced by him. The cast was always
huge, the costumes colourful; there were dances, fairies, knights and
ladies, honest tradesmen, romance and farce. The whole never failed to
captivate the audience and bring sheer joy to the players - worth all
the troubles and tribulations of rehearsals. His love for the living theatre
probably came next after that for the school and he began and inspired
that long run of remarkable and successful productions which have been,
and still are, such and outstanding feature of the school. This dictum
- "You get the standard you demand" - was never more fully proved. And
who will ever forget Mr Mellor in his most jovial mood at the Christmas
parties. The school, in its variety of Decorations, the Hall with its
evergreens, streamers and balloons, the huge Christmas Tree with its lights,
the tea, the ageless games and Father Christmas. No wonder that 'happy'
is the adjective most often applied to the school. Tapton was ever foremost
in his mind. So closely was he bound up with the school that to former
pupils it is impossible to think of Tapton without thinking of Mr Mellor,
and not only to former pupils but to most people in Chesterfield and even
beyond. All who came to Tapton will never cease to be proud of their connection
with him and remember him with affection, admiration, gratitude and respect.
He was a man of wide reading and culture; a scholar of the highest order.
He was by nature generous, kind-hearted and ever ready to help. He had
a charm of manner and a sincerity that endeared him to all, and an extraordinary
gift for remembering not only faces and names, but also the persons themselves.
He was honest, fearless and never afraid of supporting an unpopular cause;
he never shirked a duty or a responsibility. Into all pupils he instilled
a love of learning and a love for the highest ideals in the conduct of
life. He himself had an unbelievable capacity for hard work and he never
ceased to praise the value of work. To do anything less than one's best
or to give in was shame - 'The full and strenuous exercise of all the
powers of brain and body'. There in the School Charter he set out his
ideals clearly and beautifully. He was a great Headmaster; a noble example
which indeed will be for ever a beacon set before us.'
